Verb + 得个... and Verb + 个... for Lively Results

Use 落得个两手空空, 弄得个手忙脚乱 and 说个明白 to add a lively, colloquial result or degree after a verb with 个.

Pattern

动词 + 得个 + 结果/状态;动词 +(了)+ 个 + 结果/程度

个 after a verb (or after 得) introduces a result or degree in a lively, spoken way: 弄得个手忙脚乱, 问个清楚.

这件事我一定要问个清楚。

When to use Verb + 得个... and Verb + 个... for Lively Results

In a degree complement, 得 links a verb to a description: 弄得手忙脚乱, “in a real fluster.” Adding 个 after 得 makes it sound more vivid and spoken: 弄得个手忙脚乱, 忙得个不亦乐乎.

他什么都想要,最后却落得个两手空空。

He wanted everything, but in the end he was left empty-handed.

第一次自己做饭,我弄得个手忙脚乱。

Cooking by myself for the first time, I was in a real fluster.

快过年了,妈妈每天忙得个不亦乐乎。

With the New Year coming up, Mum is rushed off her feet every day.

你今天必须把话说个明白,别再让大家猜了。

You have to make yourself clear today. Don’t keep everyone guessing.

Common traps

  • 落得个 almost always introduces a bad outcome; don’t use it for good news.
  • Keep the order verb + 得 + 个: 弄得个手忙脚乱, not 弄个得手忙脚乱.
  • This 个 introduces a result, not a noun to be counted: 说个明白 has no hidden object.

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.
