X了就X了 for “What’s Done Is Done”

Use X了就X了 plus 没什么 or 有什么…… to accept something that has already happened and say it doesn’t matter.

Pattern

X了就X了,没什么 / 没关系 / 有什么……?

X了就X了 accepts a result that can’t be changed; the next clause says it is no big deal.

丢了就丢了,没什么大不了的,再买一个吧。

When to use X了就X了 for “What’s Done Is Done”

Repeat the same verb or adjective with 了 on both sides of 就: 丢了就丢了, 输了就输了, 坏了就坏了. It means “If it’s lost, it’s lost”: the thing has happened and can’t be undone.

输了就输了,有什么关系?下次再努力。

So we lost. What does it matter? We’ll try harder next time.

忘了就忘了,没关系,我再说一遍。

If you forgot, you forgot. No problem, I’ll say it again.

错过了就错过了,没什么,下一班车十分钟以后就到。

If we missed it, we missed it. It’s fine; the next bus comes in ten minutes.

坏了就坏了,反正这个杯子也用了很多年了。

If it broke, it broke. I’ve used this cup for years anyway.

Common traps

  • Repeat the same word: 丢了就丢了, not 丢了就找了.
  • Keep 了 on both sides when the thing has already happened.
  • The follow-up usually uses 没 in a statement (没关系) or 有 in a question (有什么关系?).

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.

A:对不起,我把你的书弄脏了。B:脏了就 了,没事儿

A: Sorry, I got your book dirty. B: If it’s dirty, it’s dirty. Don’t worry about it
