X什么(啊) for Friendly “No Need to …”

Use 谢什么啊 and 急什么 to wave away thanks, worries or a claim you disagree with.

Pattern

verb / adjective + 什么(啊)

X什么(啊) is not a real question; it means “there’s no need to X” or “it isn’t X at all.”

谢什么啊,我们是好朋友。

When to use X什么(啊) for Friendly “No Need to …”

Put 什么 right after a verb or adjective that the other person just used or suggested. The sentence looks like a question, but it really pushes back: “Why thank me? No need!” or “Early? It isn’t early at all!”

急什么?电影八点才开始。

What’s the rush? The movie doesn’t start until eight.

怕什么?我们一起去。

Nothing to be afraid of. We’ll go together.

早什么啊?已经十点了!

Early? It’s already ten o’clock!

难什么啊?你看,很容易。

Hard? Look, it’s easy.

Common traps

  • Don’t answer X什么(啊) with information; it is a reaction, not a question.
  • Put 什么 directly after the verb or adjective: 谢什么, not 什么谢.
  • Keep it for friends and family; it can sound blunt with teachers or strangers.

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.

A:这个问题太难了。B:难 啊?你看,很容易

A: This question is too hard. B: Hard? Look, it’s easy
