因为 + reason, 所以 + result
Use 因为 for the reason and 所以 for the result.
因为下雨,所以我没去。
When to use 因为...所以...
因为 introduces why something happens. 所以 introduces what follows from that reason. In Chinese, using both is acceptable and common for learners.
他生病了,所以没来上课。
He was sick, so he did not come to class.
因为堵车,他迟到了。
Because of traffic, he was late.
因为太贵,所以我没买。
Because it was too expensive, I did not buy it.
我很累,所以想休息一下。
I am tired, so I want to rest a bit.
Common traps
- Do not use 因为 and “because” order from English without checking clauses.
- 所以 introduces the result, not another reason.
- Chinese allows 因为...所以 together; English often avoids “because...so.”
