只好, 差点儿, 正好 and 确实 for How Things Turned Out
Four everyday mood adverbs: 只好 (had no choice but), 差点儿 (almost), 正好 (just in time) and 确实 (really, indeed).
Pattern
subject + 只好/差点儿/正好/确实 + verb
These adverbs go before the verb and show the speaker’s view of what happened: 只好 = the only option left, 差点儿 = it almost happened (but didn’t), 正好 = it happened at just the right moment, 确实 = it is really true.
下雨了,我们只好在家看电视。
When to use 只好, 差点儿, 正好 and 确实 for How Things Turned Out
All four go after the subject and before the verb or adjective. 只好 means you do something because there is no better choice: 下雨了,我们只好在家. 差点儿 means something almost happened but in the end did not: 我差点儿迟到 (I wasn’t late). 正好 means the timing or amount is just right, or something happens by lucky chance: 你来得正好, 电影正好开始. 确实 confirms that something is really true, often agreeing with what others said: 这个办法确实不错.
我今天早上起晚了,差点儿就迟到了。
I got up late this morning and was nearly late.
你来得正好,我们正要吃饭。
You came at just the right time; we’re about to eat.
这个办法确实不错,大家都说好。
This method really is good; everyone says so.
最后一班车已经走了,我只好打车回家。
The last bus had already left, so I had to take a taxi home.
Common traps
- 差点儿 means it did not happen: 我差点儿迟到 = I was not late.
- 只好 is about a choice already forced on you; don’t use it for things you are happy to choose.
- 确实 confirms a fact; it is not the same as 一定 (must, surely) for guesses about the future.
