BCT Explained: Business Chinese Test A, B, Speaking and HSK

September 21, 2026 6 min read Study Tips

BCT is the Chinese Proficiency Test (Business), an assessment of Chinese used in work and professional settings. It is a separate test from HSK, not an extra “business HSK level.” The official overview lists written assessments BCT A and B, plus a separate oral assessment. Choose an assessment according to your actual requirement and the current official information.

What the current official pages list

Checked September 22, 2026: BCT A has 70 questions across listening, reading and writing. The official page describes approximately 70 minutes including personal-information time. Its section table totals about 65 minutes before that initial five minutes.

BCT B lists 92 questions: 50 listening, 40 reading and 2 writing tasks. Its overall duration is 145 minutes including five minutes for personal information. Both A and B list a total score of 300. The separate speaking assessment is listed on the official BCT overview; consult its own current instructions for the format.

These descriptions explain structure, not local availability. Check the selected test center and current booking information for the assessment, delivery mode and date you need. A general exam page does not confirm that a nearby center offers it.

BCT versus HSK: start with the purpose

BCT emphasizes communication in work-related settings. HSK is a broader Chinese proficiency assessment. If an employer, institution or application asks for a particular test, confirm that requirement directly before choosing an alternative.

Do not infer a current HSK 3.0 equivalence from an old comparison chart. A score mapping depends on the version and the basis of the comparison. This guide does not claim that passing one test automatically establishes a particular level on the other.

For learning, general Mandarin and workplace tasks reinforce one another. You still need everyday verbs, numbers, dates and listening comprehension before specialized vocabulary becomes useful. A memorized word list alone cannot demonstrate that you can follow an instruction or write a clear message.

Build practice around an action

Try a four-step cycle: read a short notice, identify who must do what, state the deadline aloud, and write a reply. Then change one detail. This tests whether you understood the message rather than recognized familiar words.

Original practice notice: 请各部门周四下午五点前提交下周的工作安排。如需调整会议时间,请提前联系王老师。 The departments must submit next week’s work arrangements before 5 p.m. Thursday. Anyone needing a meeting-time change should contact Teacher Wang in advance.

Useful reading clues are 各部门, “each department,” 前, “before,” and 如需, “if needed.” The notice contains two actions; a reply that addresses only the meeting may miss the main submission requirement. This is original learning practice, not a copied or official BCT question.

我们会按时提交工作安排。

Wǒ men huì àn shí tí jiāo gōng zuò ān pái.

We will submit the work arrangements on time.

请问提交后还能修改吗?

Qǐng wèn tí jiāo hòu hái néng xiū gǎi ma?

May I ask whether changes are possible after submission?

Use official samples for format, original tasks for transfer

Consult the official BCT resources for current instructions and sample material. Use the linked email and business lessons to practice communicating the same information in a fresh situation. Keep notes on mistakes in dates, negation and required actions; they often matter more than an unfamiliar technical noun.

Vocabulary to keep

Words and expressions in this article. Open a word in the dictionary to explore its readings and meanings.

ChinesePinyinMeaning in this lesson
商务 shāng wù business affairs
考试 kǎo shì examination; to take an exam
听力 tīng lì listening comprehension
阅读 yuè dú reading
写作 xiě zuò writing
口语 kǒu yǔ spoken language

How to use these words

听力

听力 in an exam context means listening comprehension, not simply whether you can hear a sound. A useful listening task asks you to recover information or an intended action. After a short workplace message, state the person, task and deadline without looking at a transcript. If one number is uncertain, replay that detail rather than treating recognition of the general topic as full understanding.

我的听力需要更多练习。

Wǒ de tīng lì xū yào gèng duō liàn xí.

My listening comprehension needs more practice.

Name the skill you want to improve, then choose a task that measures it.

口语

口语 means spoken language or speaking ability. It is broader than the name of one oral test. Preparing a spoken response involves retrieving language and organizing information, which differs from recognizing a correct written option. Explain a changed meeting time aloud, including the original time, new time and reason, rather than only memorizing a dialogue word for word.

我想练习工作中常用的口语。

Wǒ xiǎng liàn xí gōng zuò zhōng cháng yòng de kǒu yǔ.

I want to practice spoken language commonly used at work.

The sentence states a learning goal, not a claim about a particular exam format.

Check your understanding

Choose an answer or say your own response before opening the explanation.

In the original notice, is contacting 王老师 required for every department?

Show answer and explanation

No. That instruction applies if someone needs to change the meeting time. All departments still have the submission deadline.

An application explicitly asks for HSK. Does BCT’s business focus prove it will be accepted instead?

Show answer and explanation

No. Confirm the requirement with the receiving institution. This guide provides no automatic equivalence or acceptance claim.

Common questions

Is BCT Speaking included in every BCT A or B registration?

The official overview describes the oral assessment separately. Do not assume that booking a written assessment includes it. Check the selected assessment and test center’s current registration details.

Are these practice questions official BCT questions?

No. They are original learning exercises for transferring language to workplace situations. Use the linked official resources for current test instructions and sample formats.
