Baobei and Chinese Terms of Endearment: What Fits Your Relationship?
宝贝 (bǎo bèi) can mean a treasure or something precious, and as a form of address it can mean “darling” or “baby.” Partners may use it, and adults may use it affectionately with a child. The affectionate use depends on a relationship; knowing the dictionary meaning does not make it a suitable way to address a stranger.
宝贝 and 亲爱的
宝贝 emphasizes preciousness and affection. 亲爱的 (qīn ài de) is another way to say “dear” or “darling.” Both may sound intimate when used directly to an individual. A mass message beginning 亲爱的朋友们, “dear friends,” belongs to a different setting from calling a colleague 亲爱的.
宝宝 (bǎo bao) literally refers to a baby and can also be a cute nickname in intimate speech. Some adults enjoy it; others find it childish or uncomfortable. A useful rule is to follow the name or nickname someone has welcomed rather than assume that a term is flattering.
宝贝，到家以后给我发个消息。

Relationship labels are not all nicknames
男朋友 (nán péng you) means boyfriend and 女朋友 (nǚ péng you) means girlfriend. They describe a relationship. 朋友 is a friend; adding 男 or 女 changes the usual interpretation, so do not use 女朋友 when you only mean a female friend.
老公 (lǎo gōng) and 老婆 (lǎo po) are familiar words for husband and wife, and couples sometimes use them playfully before marriage. That playful use does not make them generic terms for any man or woman. 丈夫 and 妻子 are more neutral written or descriptive alternatives.

Use this if you do not intend to say that you are dating.
Cute behavior, teasing and boundaries
撒娇 (sā jiāo) describes behaving in a cute, coaxing or dependent way to seek affection or indulgence. It is not a simple translation of flirting, and it is not behavior exclusive to one gender. Describe the particular scene rather than using it as a rule for how partners should behave.
单身狗 (dān shēn gǒu), literally “single dog,” is a self-mocking slang label for being single. Calling someone else this can be unwelcome. 恋爱脑 (liàn ài nǎo) criticizes someone as letting romance dominate their judgment. These are not interchangeable with neutral words such as 单身.
When learning affectionate language, practice both giving and respecting a preference. “叫我的名字就好” (jiào wǒ de míng zi jiù hǎo) means “Just call me by my name.” A good response is to use that name, without debating whether your nickname was meant kindly.

How to use these words
亲爱的
亲爱的 can stand alone as an affectionate address or come before a person or group in a greeting. It is not automatically romantic: a letter may address “dear friends.” In a private conversation, however, calling someone 亲爱的 can suggest familiarity that has not been established. Translate its role in the whole greeting rather than assigning it one fixed relationship.
亲爱的，今天过得怎么样？
Qīn ài de, jīn tiān guò de zěn me yàng?
This example assumes the speakers already welcome affectionate address.
撒娇
撒娇 describes acting in a deliberately cute, coaxing or dependent way to seek affection or indulgence. English “flirt” is not a complete equivalent because a child can 撒娇 with a parent. It also does not necessarily mean a tantrum. Whether the behavior sounds endearing or annoying depends on the speaker’s attitude and the relationship being described.
孩子在跟妈妈撒娇。
Hái zi zài gēn mā ma sā jiāo.
The relationship makes a romantic translation inappropriate.

Common questions
Are laogong and laopo only used by married people?
They ordinarily mean husband and wife in familiar speech. Some unmarried couples use them playfully, and fans may use them in exaggerated admiration. Those uses do not change a person’s legal or actual relationship status.
Can baobei address a man?
Yes. 宝贝 is not restricted to one gender. What matters is whether the people involved accept that affectionate form of address. It is not a safe default for a new acquaintance, customer or colleague.
