520, 1314 and 5201314: Chinese Romantic Number Codes
520 conventionally stands for 我爱你, “I love you,” in Chinese messaging. 1314 stands for 一生一世, “for a lifetime.” Together, 5201314 is an affectionate “I love you for a lifetime.” These are conventional sound associations, not a system in which each digit translates exactly into an English or Chinese word.
The digits and the intended phrase
Read 520 digit by digit as wǔ èr líng. Read 我爱你 as wǒ ài nǐ. They are not identical Standard Mandarin pronunciations. Learners should understand the shared convention without changing their pronunciation of 五, 二 or 零 to force a match.
Likewise, 1314 is yī sān yī sì as a digit string. The phrase it represents is 一生一世, usually pronounced yì shēng yí shì in connected speech. 一 changes tone in those two positions. That is an ordinary pronunciation feature of 一; it does not turn 三 into 生 or 四 into 世.
Because 520 can be read as May 20 in a date context, it also appears in romantic occasion marketing and messages. A product price or account code still needs to be interpreted in its actual setting.
Reading and replying to a message
A code can be playful, earnest or intentionally over-the-top. A long string does not tell you how committed someone is, and there is no universal gender rule assigning 520 to one gender and 521 to another.

一生一世 expresses a whole lifetime in a heightened, often romantic register. You may see it in promises, song titles or dramatic dialogue. It is not the usual phrase for reporting how many years a task takes. A number code borrows that emotional association, but receiving 1314 does not tell you how serious the sender is without context.
