Hanfu vs Qipao: Chinese Clothing Words and Useful Descriptions
汉服 (hàn fú) is an umbrella term associated with traditional Han Chinese clothing and its modern revival. 旗袍 (qí páo), also known in English as cheongsam, names a different clothing tradition with a recognizable modern dress form. Neither word means simply “any Chinese dress,” and both encompass variation.
Describe the garment instead of guessing from one detail
A modern qipao often has a standing collar, a fitted silhouette and side slits, but individual designs vary in length, sleeves and cut. A single collar detail does not establish a garment’s whole history or category.
Hanfu can refer to multiple historical styles and modern interpretations. It is not one uniform costume worn in the same way across every period. If you are discussing a particular outfit, ask what style it is rather than assuming that a social-media label is a precise historical description.
These terms are useful for language and cultural understanding. This lesson does not prescribe who may wear a garment or present a shopping recommendation.
Clothing verbs, fit and fabric
穿 (chuān) is used for wearing clothes and shoes. 戴 (dài) is used for items such as hats, glasses and jewelry. 衣服 is clothing in general, 裙子 a skirt or dress, 袖子 a sleeve, and 领子 a collar.
合适 (hé shì) means suitable or fitting well. 大小 describes size. 长 and 短 describe length; 紧 and 松 can describe tightness or looseness. These words let you explain what you mean instead of relying only on 漂亮, “beautiful.”

一点 makes a comparative request more precise.
Ask a useful question about an outfit
“这是什么款式？” asks what style something is. “是什么面料？” asks about the fabric. If the answer includes unfamiliar terminology, “可以给我解释一下吗？” asks for an explanation.
A compliment can focus on a specific choice: “这个颜色很适合你” means “This color suits you very well.” It does not require commenting on the person’s body or making claims about authenticity.
For reading practice, compare two descriptions: one emphasizes a short sleeve and fitted cut; another describes layers and a loose outer garment. You can identify the stated features, but you still need more evidence to make a confident historical classification. This habit is useful whenever visual categories overlap.

How to use these words
款式
款式 refers to the design or style of an item. It lets you ask about a specific garment instead of assuming every example of 汉服 or 旗袍 has identical features. 这种款式 means “this style.” When comparing photographs, describe the collar, sleeves or cut you can actually see before attaching a historical label.

袖子
袖子 means sleeves. 长袖 and 短袖 describe long and short sleeves, while 宽 describes width. Length and width are different features: a long sleeve need not be wide. These ordinary clothing words are useful for asking about fit and identifying differences between two garments without needing a specialist costume vocabulary.

有点 often introduces a slightly undesirable quality in a fit assessment.

No. A writing system and a clothing category are different things. A modern product description can use traditional or simplified characters regardless of the historical style of the garment.
