Happy Birthday in Chinese: Wishes That Fit the Person
生日快乐 (shēng rì kuài lè) is the standard starting point for “Happy birthday.” Add 祝你 or the respectful 祝您 when you want “I wish you…” A good message then adds something personal: health, a pleasant year, or a plan to celebrate together. More elaborate wording is not automatically more thoughtful.
Build a wish with 祝
祝你生日快乐 means “I wish you a happy birthday.” 祝 is followed by the person receiving the wish and then the desired outcome. You can reuse the pattern in 祝你一切顺利, “I wish you success with everything.”
快乐 focuses on happiness or joy. 开心 is also useful for feeling happy or having a good time. In a birthday message, 天天开心, “be happy every day,” is a friendly wish rather than a demand that someone must never feel sad.

Friends, elders and colleagues
For a friend, connect the greeting to something you share: “周末一起吃饭吧” suggests a meal together at the weekend. For an older relative, a wish for good health can be appropriate, but follow the family’s preferred address rather than guessing a kinship term.
寿 (shòu) appears in language associated with longevity and elders’ birthdays. Expressions such as 福如东海、寿比南山 are highly conventional and ceremonious. They are not required in every birthday text and may sound playful or exaggerated for a young friend.
For a colleague, keep the message warm without claiming intimacy. A simple birthday wish and a relevant personal line usually works better than romantic endearments or elaborate praise.
Ask about the celebration without making assumptions
“你打算怎么过生日？” asks how someone plans to spend their birthday. They may prefer a quiet day or may not celebrate. A date can follow the Gregorian or lunar calendar in different families; if you need to arrange something, confirm the actual date rather than infer it from tradition.
蛋糕 means cake, 礼物 means gift, and 愿望 means a wish. “许个愿吧” invites someone to make a wish. Learn these together with a concrete situation so you can understand a small celebration, not just send a memorized greeting.
When writing, avoid adding promises you cannot keep. A useful beginner message can be three short sentences: the greeting, one sincere wish, and a genuine invitation. Read it aloud slowly and check the name or title before sending it.

祝 introduces a wish directed at someone: 祝你生日快乐. It does not need an extra verb meaning “have” before the good wish. To expand a message, keep the recipient and add a suitable state, such as 身体健康. Hope expressed with 希望 follows a different construction, so do not swap the two words mechanically in every sentence.

您 adds respect; the health wish is especially suitable when you know it will be appreciated.
愿望
愿望 is a wish or aspiration. 许愿 means making a wish, while 实现愿望 means fulfilling it. These phrases describe different moments in a birthday scene. If someone is about to blow out candles, asking whether they have made a wish is more natural than telling them to “have a wish” through a word-for-word English construction.
