遍 emphasizes a complete process from start to finish, while 次 simply counts an occurrence. Saying 看了一次电影 doesn't imply finishing the movie, but 看了一遍 does.

Guides that feature 遍
Jump into a full guide with fill-in-the-blank drills. Clicking will load the page and move you to the top.
Count actions with 口 (a bite or sip), 回 (a time), 遍 (once through, start to finish) and 声 (a call or sound).
In a 把 sentence, a count or a time length goes after the verb (读了两遍), and a manner word goes after the object, right before the verb (轻轻地关上).
Say how many times you did something with verb + number + 次, and put the object in the right place.
