了, 过, and 着 do not map cleanly to English tense. They mark event completion/change, experience, and continuing state.

我去过那个地方。

I have been to that place before.

门开着,我们进去吧。

The door is open; let us go in.

他穿着黑色衣服。

He is wearing black clothes.

我已经看完了。

I already finished reading it.

Common traps

  • Do not treat 了 as past tense.
  • 过 is not tied to a specific time unless you add one.
  • 着 describes states more often than active progress.
