Use 非...不可 for strong necessity in advanced spoken and written Chinese.

非 + verb phrase + 不可

When to use Necessity with 非...不可

非...不可 means there is no acceptable alternative. It can express objective necessity or someone’s strong insistence.

这件事非他亲自出面不可。

He absolutely must appear personally for this matter.

要想通过考试，基础非打牢不可。

To pass the exam, the foundation absolutely must be solid.

安全问题非重视不可。

Safety issues absolutely must be taken seriously.

这个错误非改不可。

This mistake absolutely must be corrected.

Common traps

  • 非...不可 is stronger than 必须.
  • Put the required action between 非 and 不可.
