别的 and 其他 for “Other”

Use 别的 and 其他 to talk about other things, people and places.

Pattern

别的 / 其他 + noun; 别的 or 其他的 on its own

Both mean “other”. 别的 is more casual; 其他 is common for “the rest” of a group and in writing.

When to use 别的 and 其他 for “Other”

Put 别的 or 其他 directly before a noun: 别的书, 其他颜色. No extra 的 is needed, because 别的 already ends in 的.

我们去别的地方看看吧。

Let’s go and look at another place.

我不要别的，只要一杯水。

I don’t want anything else, just a glass of water.

小王没来，其他同学都来了。

Xiao Wang didn’t come; the other students all came.

这个颜色我不喜欢，有其他颜色吗？

I don’t like this color. Do you have other colors?

Common traps

  • Don’t add another 的: say 别的书, not 别的的书.
  • Use 别人, not 别的, for “other people” on its own.
  • When 其他 is used without a noun, it usually takes 的: 其他的我不要了.
