不用 and 不必 for “No Need To”
Use 不用 and 不必 to say something is not necessary.
Pattern
Subject + 不用 / 不必 + verb phrase
Both mean “there’s no need to”. 不用 is everyday speech; 不必 sounds a bit more formal.
你不用担心,我自己能回家。
When to use 不用 and 不必 for “No Need To”
Put 不用 or 不必 before the verb phrase. They tell someone that an action is not needed. They don’t forbid it.
明天不上课,你不用早起。
There’s no class tomorrow, so you don’t need to get up early.
这件事你不必告诉他。
You don’t need to tell him about this.
外面不冷,不用穿这么多。
It’s not cold outside; you don’t need to wear so much.
你不必着急,时间还早。
There’s no need to hurry; it’s still early.
Common traps
- Don’t say 不必须; the negative of 必须 is 不用 or 不必.
- 不用 + verb means “no need to”, but 不用 + noun can mean “not use”: 我不用手机 means “I don’t use a phone.”
- Use 别 to tell someone not to do something; 不用 only says it isn’t necessary.
