不管...,都/也... for “No Matter …”

Use 不管 with a question word, an A不A choice or 还是 to say the result stays the same in every case, then add 都 or 也.

Pattern

不管 + question word / A不A / A还是B,(subject +) 都/也 + result

不管 means “no matter.” The condition must leave the answer open: a question word (谁, 什么, 怎么样, 多), an A不A form, or A还是B. The result clause uses 都 or 也 to say nothing changes.

When to use 不管...,都/也... for “No Matter …”

不管 covers every possible case, so what follows it must be open, not a single fact. Use (1) a question word: 不管谁来, 不管天气怎么样, 不管多忙; (2) an A不A form: 不管你去不去; or (3) A还是B: 不管是大人还是孩子. Then the result clause says what stays true, with 都 or 也 after its subject: 我都要去, 他每天都去跑步.

Whether you go or not, I’m going.

No matter how busy she is, she calls home every day.

Adults and children alike love this cartoon.

Whoever comes has to write their name here first.

Common traps

  • Don’t follow 不管 with a plain fact: say 不管天气多冷, not 不管天气很冷.
  • Don’t forget 都 or 也 in the result clause, after its subject.
  • Use 多 + adjective for “however …”: 不管多忙, not 不管很忙.
