When to use 除了 for “Except”
除了 can mean “except for” or “besides,” depending on the rest of the sentence. The following adverbs decide whether the item is excluded or included.

Except for this book, I have read all the others.
除了咖啡,我什么都不喝。
Except for coffee, I drink nothing.

Common traps
- 除了 can mean except or besides; check 都, 也, and 还.
- 以外 is often optional but helpful in longer sentences.
