向...致以... and 值此...之际 for Formal Greetings

Use 值此……之际 to open a speech or letter “on the occasion of …” and 向……致以…… to extend greetings, thanks or respect to someone.

Pattern

值此 + occasion + 之际,向 + person + 致以 + greeting

值此……之际 sets the occasion; 向……致以…… sends formal greetings, thanks or respect to someone.

值此教师节到来之际,我们向全体老师致以节日的问候。

When to use 向...致以... and 值此...之际 for Formal Greetings

向……致以…… means “to extend … to ….” 向 introduces the people you are addressing, and after 致以 comes a polite noun with a describing phrase: 节日的问候 (holiday greetings), 衷心的感谢 (heartfelt thanks), 崇高的敬意 (deep respect), 新年的祝福 (New Year wishes).

值此新年来临之际,学校向全体同学和家长致以新年的祝福。

As the New Year arrives, the school extends New Year wishes to all students and parents.

Here, on behalf of the whole class, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the teachers.

值此校庆一百周年之际,我们向所有老校友致以诚挚的问候。

On the occasion of the school’s 100th anniversary, we extend sincere greetings to all former students.

值此毕业之际,我们向老师们致以最真诚的感谢。

As we graduate, we offer our most sincere thanks to our teachers.

Common traps

  • Close 值此 with 之际: 值此新年来临之际, not 值此新年来临.
  • 致以 needs a polite noun object such as 问候, 感谢 or 敬意, usually with a describing phrase before it.
  • Don’t mix up 致以 with 以致 (“so that; as a result”), which is a different word.

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.
