When to use (你)还别说 for “You Know, It’s Actually True”
(你)还别说 is a spoken marker. The speaker didn’t expect much, but now has to admit something is true or good, like “You know what? …” or “I have to say …”.
I have to say, the noodles at this little shop are pretty good.
I didn’t want to go at first, but you know, this trip was really fun.
You know, the cat he drew looks just like a real one.
I thought this book would be boring, but you know what? After two pages I couldn’t put it down.
Common traps
- 还别说 does not mean “don’t say it”; it introduces something surprisingly true.
- Put it at the start of its clause, usually followed by 还真, 真 or 挺.
- Don’t confuse it with 别说……连…… (“let alone”).
