何 and 怎么着 for Formal and Casual Questions
Use 何 in formal written questions like 何时 and 有何不同, and 怎么着 in casual speech to ask “what’s the plan?” or to show surprise.
Pattern
何 is a formal, written “what/which/why” that combines with other words; 怎么着 is a casual spoken “what to do / what’s up”.

When to use 何 and 怎么着 for Formal and Casual Questions
何 is the classical word for “what”. In modern Chinese it rarely stands alone; it joins other words to make formal question words: 何时 (when), 何地 / 何处 (where), 何人 (who), 为何 (why), 如何 (how), 有何 (have what), 何在 (where … lies).
When does this lecture begin?
Why didn’t he come to today’s meeting?
Where exactly does the cause of the problem lie?
Oh, so you want to come with us too?
Common traps
- Don’t use 何 on its own in conversation: say 你要什么, not 你要何.
- 怎么着 is casual; keep it out of essays and formal notices.
