好你个X for Playful “Why, You …!”

Use 好你个 + name to tease or mock-scold someone who has surprised you, like English “Why, you …!”

Pattern

好你个 + name / description of the person (,+ what they did)

好你个X is a spoken exclamation of surprise at what someone did; it sounds like a scolding but is often friendly teasing.

When to use 好你个X for Playful “Why, You …!”

Say 好你个 and then the person’s name or a word for them: 好你个小明, 好你个老李, 好你个小家伙. The next clause usually says what they did that surprised you.

You little rascal, playing with my phone behind my back again!

Well, Lao Li! You went on a trip and didn’t even invite me!

Zhang Hua, you came first in the exam and didn’t even tell us!

Xiao Wang, you knew the answer all along and still let me think about it for ages!

Common traps

  • Do not drop 个: 好你小明 is wrong.
  • The word order is fixed: 好你个, not 你好个.
  • Do not confuse it with 好一个 + noun, which means “what a …!”

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.

Zhang Hua, you came first in the exam and didn’t even tell us!
