Choose the right “can” for skill, possibility, and permission.
Pattern
Use 会 for learned skill, 能 for ability or circumstances, 可以 for permission.
When to use 能, 会, and 可以
English uses “can” broadly, but Chinese separates skill, physical or situational ability, and permission. 会 is learned know-how; 能 is capacity or circumstances; 可以 is allowed.
Today I cannot go.
Can I park here?
She can swim.
It is too late; I cannot call.
Common traps
- Do not use 会 for permission.
- 可以 is often the safest “may I” in requests.
- 能 can mean conditions allow it, not just personal skill.
