Serial Verb Sentences
Say go buy food, come see me, sit down eat, and other action chains.
Pattern
Subject + verb phrase + verb phrase
Put two actions in natural order without adding “and.”
我去买咖啡。
When to use Serial Verb Sentences
Chinese often strings verbs in the order they happen or in purpose order. The first action sets up the second.
你明天来找我。
Come see me tomorrow.
她去商店买东西。
She goes to the shop to buy things.
我们坐车去机场。
We take a car to go to the airport.
他回家吃饭。
He goes home to eat.
Common traps
- Do not add 和 between action verbs.
- Keep the actions in real or purpose order.
- Use punctuation or connectors if the sentence gets too long.
