X,…… for “Look at You, a Grown X …”

X,…… to gently tease or scold someone whose behavior doesn’t match who they are, like a university student who can’t write a simple character.

Pattern

The speaker names who the listener is, then points out behavior that doesn’t fit, usually as a friendly complaint.

When to use 你说你一个X,…… for “Look at You, a Grown X …”

你说 here doesn’t ask for an answer. It works like “I mean, really” or “just look at you.” Then 你一个X names who the listener is: a university student, a class monitor, an older brother. The rest of the sentence shows what they did that doesn’t fit that identity.

Really, a high school student like you, and Mum still has to wake you up every day?

Come on, you’re the class monitor. How can you be the first one to arrive late?

You’re the big brother, after all. Why don’t you let your little sister have her way a bit?

You study painting, and you can’t even tell these two colors apart?

Common traps

  • 你说 is not a real question here; don’t answer it with 我说…….
  • Keep 一个 before the identity: 你说你一个大学生, not 你说你大学生.
  • It sounds like a complaint, so use it with friends and family, not with teachers or strangers.

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.

You’re the big brother, after all. Why don’t you let your little sister have her way a bit?
