Result Complements 错, 懂, 好, 会, 完
Add 错, 懂, 好, 会 or 完 after a verb to say how an action turned out: 写错, 听懂, 做好, 学会, 吃完.
Pattern
Verb + 错/懂/好/会/完 (+ 了) (+ object); 没 + verb + result
The verb says what you did; the word right after it says how it ended: 听 is listening, 听懂 is understanding.
饭做好了,快来吃吧!
When to use Result Complements 错, 懂, 好, 会, 完
A result complement is a word placed right after a verb to show what the action led to. 错 means it was done wrongly (写错, 说错), 懂 means you understood (听懂, 看懂), 好 means it is done properly or ready (做好), 会 means you can now do it (学会), and 完 means it is finished (吃完, 看完). The verb and its result stay together, and 了 and the object come after both: 我吃完饭了.
对不起,我说错了,今天是星期三。
Sorry, I said it wrong. Today is Wednesday.
这本书我看懂了。
I understood this book.
我吃完饭就去。
I’ll go as soon as I finish eating.
老师说的话,你听懂了吗?
Did you understand what the teacher said?
Common traps
- Say 我没听懂, not 我不听懂: a result that did not happen is negated with 没.
- Say 我吃完饭了, not 我吃饭完了: the result word comes right after the verb, before the object.
- Say 我学会游泳了 when you can now swim; 我学游泳了 only says you took lessons.
