空间顺序 and 逻辑顺序 for Organising a Paragraph

Organise a Chinese paragraph by space (walking the reader through a place) or by logic (first, second, finally; in short).

Pattern

Choose one ordering principle for a paragraph and keep it: follow the eye through a place, or follow the reasoning from point to point.

When to use 空间顺序 and 逻辑顺序 for Organising a Paragraph

When you describe a place, put the sentences in the order a visitor would see things: from outside to inside, near to far, left to right, top to bottom, or from the centre outwards. Each new sentence starts from something already mentioned and moves one step on.

My room isn’t big: to the left of the door is the desk, to the right is the bed, and a map hangs on the wall above the bed.

In the middle of the park there is a small lake. Around the lake is grass, and beyond the grass there is a ring of tall trees.

To learn Chinese well, first listen and speak a lot, next read and write a lot, and finally keep at it.

Cycling to school has many advantages. First, it’s good for the environment; second, it gives you exercise; finally, traffic jams don’t matter.

Common traps

  • Once you pick an order, such as near to far, keep it to the end of the paragraph instead of jumping around.
  • 其次 introduces the second point, never the first.
  • 总之 sums up what has already been said; it does not introduce a new point.

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.
