要(让)我说 for “If You Ask Me”

Start with 要我说 or 要让我说 to give your own opinion or advice: “If you ask me …”.

Pattern

要(让)我说,+ opinion or advice(应该/最好/还是……)

要我说 introduces the speaker’s own view, often as direct advice.

When to use 要(让)我说 for “If You Ask Me”

要我说 and 要让我说 both mean “if you ask me” or “if it were up to me”. Here 要 is short for 要是 (“if”), and 让 is optional, so 要我说 is literally “if (you let) me say it”. Plain 让我说 without 要 usually just means “let me speak”, so it is not this marker.

If you ask me, this isn’t his fault.

If it were up to me, going hiking this weekend would be best.

If you ask me, you’d better talk it over with the teacher first.

If you ask me, this problem isn’t actually hard.

Common traps

  • Here 要 means “if”, not “want”: 要我说 is short for 要是让我说. Without 要, 让我说 just means “let me speak”.
  • Put 要我说 at the start, then a comma and your opinion; don’t put it at the end.
  • It sounds direct; to be softer, use

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.

A: Where shall we eat? B: If you ask me, let’s go to the place next to school
