一起 for “Together”
Use 一起 before the verb to say people do something together.
Pattern
(跟/和 + person +) 一起 + verb
一起 goes before the verb, not after it; name the partner first with 跟 or 和.
我跟朋友一起去公园。
When to use 一起 for “Together”
一起 is an adverb, so it comes before the verb. English puts “together” at the end (“let’s eat together”), but Chinese says 我们一起吃饭, never 我们吃饭一起.
我们一起吃饭吧。
Let’s eat together.
他们一起去旅游了。
They went traveling together.
我们一起学习中文吧。
Let’s study Chinese together.
我和妈妈一起做饭。
Mom and I cook together.
Common traps
- Put 一起 before the verb: 我们一起去, not 我们去一起.
- The partner comes before 一起: 跟朋友一起去, not 一起跟朋友去.
- Use 都 for “all of us”; 一起 only means “as a group.”
