又...又... for “Both … And …”

Use 又……又…… to give two qualities or actions at the same time.

Pattern

又 + adjective / verb phrase (，) 又 + adjective / verb phrase

又……又…… adds two things that point the same way: both good or both bad.

这家饭馆的菜又便宜又好吃。

When to use 又...又... for “Both … And …”

Put 又 before each of two adjectives or verb phrases: 又便宜又好吃. Both parts describe the same subject, and they work together to make one point.

这个图书馆又干净又安静。

This library is both clean and quiet.

今天的作业又多又难。

There’s a lot of homework today, and it’s hard too.

他又会唱歌又会跳舞。

He can both sing and dance.

孩子们又唱又跳，非常开心。

The children sang and danced; they were very happy.

Common traps

  • Repeat 又 before both parts: 又便宜又好吃, not 又便宜也好吃.
  • Keep both parts pointing the same way; use 虽然……但是…… for a contrast.
  • Use 一边……一边…… for two actions happening at the same moment.
