再 and 就 for “Again” and “Then”
Use 再 for doing something again later, and 再 and 就 to link one step to the next.
Pattern
再 + verb (again, later); 先 A,再 B; 一 A 就 B
再 points to something that has not happened yet; 就 says the next thing follows right away.
我明天再来。
When to use 再 and 就 for “Again” and “Then”
再 goes right before the verb and means “again” or “once more.” It talks about a repeat that has not happened yet: a plan, a request, or a suggestion.
请你再说一次。
Please say it one more time.
这个菜很好吃,我想再吃一点儿。
This dish is delicious. I want to eat a little more.
再见!
Goodbye! (literally “see you again”)
我们先吃饭,再看电影。
Let’s eat first, then watch a movie.
Common traps
- For a repeat that already happened, use 又, not 再: 他今天又来了.
- Put 再 and 就 after the subject and before the verb: 我们先吃饭,再走, not 先吃饭,再我们走.
- 先...再... gives steps in order; 一...就... stresses that the second thing happens right away.
