A + 有 + B + 那么/这么 + adjective
有 here means “reaches”: A is as tall, cold or big as B. It is most common in questions and with 没有.
弟弟有哥哥那么高吗?
When to use A有B那么... for “As … As”
In A有B那么/这么 + adjective, 有 does not mean “to have”. It means A reaches B’s level. B is the standard, and the adjective says which quality you are measuring. 那么 is the usual choice; 这么 is common when B is close to the speaker (often 我 or 这儿).
我弟弟已经有我这么高了。
My younger brother is already as tall as me.
今天没有昨天那么热。
Today isn’t as hot as yesterday.
这儿有北京那么冷吗?
Is it as cold here as in Beijing?
这个菜有你说的那么好吃吗?
Is this dish as tasty as you said?
Common traps
- Don’t read 有 as “have” here; it means “reach B’s level”.
- The negative is 没有, not 不有: say 今天没有昨天那么热.
- Don’t put 比 and 那么 together: 他比我那么高 is wrong; use 他比我高 or 他有我那么高.
