X for “It Had to Happen Right Now”

X to complain that something happened at exactly the worst moment.

Pattern

The pattern says X didn’t happen earlier or later, but at the most inconvenient time.

When to use 早不X,晚不X for “It Had to Happen Right Now”

Repeat the same verb X after 早不 and 晚不: 早不下雨,晚不下雨. Literally, “it didn’t rain earlier, it didn’t rain later.” The third part says when it did happen, and that moment is always a bad one.

My phone could have broken any time, but it broke the day before the exam.

The bus wouldn’t come and wouldn’t come, and the moment I walked away, it arrived.

He didn’t say anything earlier, and waited until we had all bought tickets to say he didn’t want to go.

The power didn’t go out earlier or later. It went out right when I was cooking.

Common traps

  • Repeat the same X in both parts: 早不来,晚不来, not 早不来,晚不到.
  • The last part names the bad moment; 偏偏 fits, 果然 (“as expected”) does not.
  • Do not confuse it with 不早不晚 (“at just the right time”).

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.
