于是... and 便... for “So … Then …”
Use 于是 and 便 to tell what happened next because of what came before.
Pattern
Event 1,于是 + event 2 | Subject + 便 + verb
于是 links a situation to the action it led to; 便 is a written “就” placed right before the verb.
When to use 于是... and 便... for “So … Then …”
于是 starts the second clause. The first clause describes a situation, and 于是 introduces what someone did next because of it. It is mostly used to tell about things that have already happened.
I saw him sitting there alone, so I went over and chatted with him.
He noticed his phone was missing, so he went straight back to the classroom to look for it.
He left the house as soon as he finished breakfast.
After we arrived, we started getting the party ready.
Common traps
- Put 便 after the subject: 他便走了, not 便他走了.
- Don’t pair 于是 with 因为; use 因为……所以…… for cause and result.
- For future plans in order, use 先……
