Chinese New Year Greetings: 新年快乐 and 恭喜发财
新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè) means “Happy New Year.” 恭喜发财 (gōng xǐ fā cái) is a wish for prosperity, not a literal translation of those English words. Both can appear during Lunar New Year celebrations, but they emphasize different things. Choose a greeting that fits the occasion and the person.
Name the occasion clearly
春节 (chūn jié), the Spring Festival, refers to the Lunar New Year festival in this context. 新年 can also refer to the calendar new year, so 春节快乐 makes the festival explicit. Do not assume that every speaker celebrates in exactly the same way.
拜年 (bài nián) means paying a New Year visit or offering New Year greetings. It can describe an activity rather than a single fixed phrase. 红包 (hóng bāo) is a red envelope, including digital gifts in modern contexts; receiving or sending one follows the particular relationship and occasion.
Prosperity, health and things going well
恭喜 expresses congratulations, while 发财 means becoming prosperous or making money. Together they function as a conventional seasonal wish. Mandarin gōng xǐ fā cái and Cantonese pronunciations often romanized as “gong hei fat choy” belong to different language varieties; do not label the Cantonese form Mandarin pinyin.
身体健康 wishes good health. 万事如意 wishes that things go as hoped. 工作顺利 wishes smooth progress at work. You can combine two appropriate wishes instead of reciting a long list whose meaning you do not know.
新年快乐!祝你和家人身体健康。
Xīn nián kuài lè! Zhù nǐ hé jiā rén shēn tǐ jiàn kāng.
春节快乐,祝大家工作顺利!
Chūn jié kuài lè, zhù dà jiā gōng zuò shùn lì!
A group greeting without assuming everyone has the same personal plans.
Reply naturally and personalize one line
“谢谢,也祝你新年快乐!” means “Thank you, and Happy New Year to you too!” 也 makes the return wish explicit. You do not have to invent a more elaborate greeting than the one you received.
For someone you know well, add a concrete hope or plan. For a customer or colleague, use the established name or title and avoid intimate nicknames. The greeting is a social opening; a business request may belong in a separate, clearly worded sentence.
Zodiac-specific greetings change with the year and can sound forced if copied without understanding. The phrases in this lesson remain useful across years. Confirm the actual festival dates separately when planning travel or an event.

How to use these words
拜年
拜年 means offering New Year greetings, traditionally often through visiting and now also through calls or messages. 给某人拜年 names the person receiving the greeting. It is an activity, unlike 新年快乐, which is the greeting itself. You can understand the word without assuming every family observes the same visiting schedule or ceremony.
我给爷爷奶奶打电话拜年。
Wǒ gěi yé ye nǎi nai dǎ diàn huà bài nián.
The sentence explains how the greeting is delivered.
团圆
团圆 evokes family or close people coming together again. It is useful for understanding holiday messages about reunion, but it is not simply the ordinary verb for any meeting. A colleague’s Tuesday appointment is normally a 会议 or a meeting arrangement, not a 团圆. In a greeting, acknowledge the recipient’s circumstances instead of assuming everyone can travel home.
祝你和家人团圆快乐。
Zhù nǐ hé jiā rén tuán yuán kuài lè.
Use a reunion wish when it fits the person’s plans.

Common questions
Can xinnian kuaile refer to January 1?
Yes. 新年快乐 can greet the new year generally. 春节快乐 specifically names the Spring Festival context. The date and surrounding message clarify which occasion the speaker means.
Must I reply with the same blessing?
No. 谢谢,你也一样 can acknowledge and return an appropriate wish. You can also choose a short blessing that suits the sender, such as good health or a smooth year. Understanding the wish matters more than matching its length.
