Chinese Lucky and Unlucky Numbers: Sounds, Phrases and Context
Some numbers have auspicious or inauspicious associations in Chinese-speaking settings because of sound play and established expressions. Eight is often associated with prosperity; four can evoke death. These are cultural associations, not predictions, and individual preferences differ. Learn the actual pronunciation alongside the association.
Eight and four: similar sounds are not identical sounds
八 is bā in Mandarin and 发 is fā; 发财 (fā cái) means to become prosperous or make money. The familiar eight/prosperity association also draws on sound similarities in varieties such as Cantonese. Do not tell a learner that bā and fā are identical Mandarin words.
四 is sì and 死 is sǐ. Their tones differ, and those tones are meaningful. An association based on resemblance is not a reason to pronounce a room number with the tone for death. A building may avoid certain numbers, but you cannot infer every resident’s beliefs from that numbering system.
Six, nine and phrases people actually use
六 (liù) can carry associations with smooth progress, including the auspicious phrase 六六大顺. 九 (jiǔ) resembles 久 (jiǔ), long-lasting, so it can be used in wishes for longevity or enduring relationships. The particular occasion supplies the intended meaning.
双 (shuāng) means a pair or double, and 好事成双 expresses the wish or observation that good things come in pairs. Do not turn that phrase into a rule that every even number is always appropriate for every gift or ceremony.
Numeric slang such as 666 and 520 uses related sound-play habits but has its own conversational meanings. A comment praising skill and a birthday gift amount are different contexts. Read them separately.

Use cultural knowledge without guessing someone’s wishes
If you are selecting a date or gift, ask about preferences and follow the actual invitation or local practice. A list of number meanings cannot establish what a particular family wants. Regional, generational and personal variation all matter.
For language practice, separate three questions: What is the literal number? Which word or phrase is it associated with? What is the speaker trying to convey here? A phone number can remain just a phone number even if it happens to contain several eights.
When listening, keep tone contrasts intact. Practice 四 sì versus 死 sǐ and 十 shí versus 四 sì. Understanding the wordplay should strengthen careful pronunciation rather than encourage you to blur it.

How to use these words
发财
发财 means becoming prosperous or making a fortune. In 恭喜发财, it forms a conventional prosperity wish. It is not a neutral synonym for receiving a salary or a promise that a particular number will bring money. When discussing eight, keep the cultural association separate from accurate Mandarin pronunciation: 八 is bā, while 发 is fā.

A prosperity greeting can be playful and enthusiastic; tailor it to the recipient.
吉利
吉利 means auspicious or associated with good fortune. It describes an interpretation, not a measurable prediction. A person might call a number 吉利 while another person sees only a practical identifier. To talk respectfully about preferences, report whose preference it is rather than declaring that all Chinese people think the same way.

Are four and death pronounced exactly alike?
In standard Mandarin, 四 is sì and 死 is sǐ. The initial and final are similar, but the tone differs. The association is a sound-based cultural convention, not permission to ignore tones.
Should I avoid every number containing four?
There is no universal rule. Some people care about auspicious numbers in particular purchases or celebrations; others do not. For a gift or arrangement, the recipient’s actual preference is more useful than a broad cultural assumption.
