When to use 不管怎样说 for “Whatever Else Is True”

不管怎样说 literally means “no matter how you put it.” It comes at the start of a clause and tells the listener: whatever else we could say, this part is true.

这次比赛我们输了，不过不管怎样说，大家都尽力了。

We lost this match, but whatever else is true, everyone did their best.

那儿是有点儿远，可是不管怎样说，那儿的风景真美。

It is a bit far, but whatever else you say, the scenery there is beautiful.

这家饭馆有点儿贵，服务也一般，不过不管怎样说，菜很好吃。

This restaurant is a bit expensive and the service is just okay, but anyway, the food is delicious.

不管怎样说，你应该先给妈妈打个电话。

Whatever the reason, you should call Mom first.

Common traps

  • Put it at the start of the clause, followed by a comma.
  • It doesn’t need 都 the way 不管天气怎么样，我们都去 does.
  • It isn’t a question: 不管怎样说 is not asking “how do you say it?”
