不料 for “Unexpectedly”
Use 不料 to start a second clause where things turn out differently from what you expected.
Pattern
plan / expectation,不料 + what actually happened
不料 opens the second clause and tells the listener that the result was not what anyone expected.
When to use 不料 for “Unexpectedly”
The first clause sets up a plan or an expectation, often with 本来, 以为 or 原来打算. The second clause starts with 不料 and tells what really happened, which goes against that expectation.
He thought the exam would be easy. To his surprise, the questions were really hard.
I thought he would get angry, but he laughed instead.
We got to the station early, but the train was unexpectedly two hours late.
The forecast said it would be sunny today, but it started raining by noon.
Common traps
- Put 不料 at the start of the second clause; don’t say 我不料你会来, say 我没想到你会来.
- 不料 needs an expectation first; without a plan or guess in the first clause it has nothing to contrast with.
- Don’t use 不料 to mean “suddenly”; that is 忽然 or 突然.
