那倒(也)是 for “That’s True, Fair Point”

Reply with 那倒是 or 那倒也是 when someone makes a point you hadn’t thought of and you accept it.

Pattern

A:point or reason。B:

那倒是 accepts the other person’s point, often one you hadn’t considered, and can lead into your own “but.”

When to use 那倒(也)是 for “That’s True, Fair Point”

那倒是 is a reply. 那 points back to what the other person just said, and 倒 adds a feeling of “well, actually.” Together they mean “well, that’s true” or “fair point.”

This room isn’t big, but it’s quite clean.

Common traps

  • Say 那倒是 in reply to a point or reason, not to accept an invitation; for that say 好啊.
  • 倒 here is dào (fourth tone), not dǎo as in “fall over.”

Targeted drill

Practice this exact pattern before moving on.

A: Don’t worry, he’s probably just stuck in traffic. B: I guess so. I’ll wait a bit longer
