When to use Basic Chinese Sentence Order

Chinese does not need English-style helper verbs for simple statements. Start with the person or topic, put time before the verb, and keep the main action close to its object.

我在学校学习。

I study at school.

她今天学习汉语。

She studies Chinese today.

明天我们去北京。

Tomorrow we go to Beijing.

老师在教室说中文。

The teacher speaks Chinese in the classroom.

Common traps

  • Do not copy English question or helping-verb order into plain statements.
  • Put time words before the verb, not at the very end.
  • Place words usually need 在 before the location.
