X也不是,Y也不是 for “Stuck Either Way”
Use 坐也不是,站也不是 and 进也进不得,退也退不得 to describe feeling stuck when no choice works.
Pattern
Both frames name two (often opposite) actions and say neither one works, so the person feels awkward or stuck.
When to use X也不是,Y也不是 for “Stuck Either Way”
Put two actions in the X and Y slots, usually opposites such as 坐 and 站, 哭 and 笑, 走 and 留, or 说 and 不说. 不是 here means “not right,” so the sentence says: doing X feels wrong, and doing Y feels wrong too.
Seeing the state he was in, I didn’t know whether to cry or laugh.
The rain kept getting heavier, and we couldn’t decide whether to leave or stay.
If I tell her, I’m afraid she’ll be upset; if I don’t, I’m afraid she’ll be angry. Saying it is wrong and not saying it is wrong.
The car was stuck in the middle of the road. It couldn’t go forward or back.
Common traps
- Keep both halves parallel: 坐也不是,站也不是, with 也不是 in each half.
- In the 不得 frame, say the verb twice: 进也进不得, 退也退不得.
- Use these frames for feeling stuck, not for a simple either/or question; use 还是 for that.
