让 and 叫

Pattern

让/叫 + person + verb

Use 让 or 叫 when someone lets, asks, or makes someone do something.

老师让我们休息十分钟。

When to use 让 and 叫

让 can mean let, have, or make depending on context. 叫 can mean call/name, but in this pattern it can also mean ask or tell someone to do something.

妈妈叫我早点回家。

Mom told me to go home earlier.

他让我帮忙。

He asked me to help.

这个电影让人很感动。

This movie makes people moved.

老板叫他明天开会。

The boss told him to attend a meeting tomorrow.

Common traps

  • Do not confuse 叫 “to be called” with 叫 someone to do something.
  • The person after 让/叫 is the one doing the next action.
  • 被 and 让 can both appear in passive-like sentences but are not identical.
