Basic Chinese Words for Beginners: 30 Words With Examples

September 21, 2026 9 min read Study Tips

You can start using Mandarin with a small set of words for people, everyday actions and simple questions. Learn each word with its sound, then put it in a sentence you might actually say. This starter selection gives you 30 basic Chinese words with pinyin and English meanings, with short examples and six demos that practise these same words.

This is a practical beginner selection, not a frequency ranking or an official HSK list. The Chinese is simplified. Tone marks show dictionary tones; pronunciation can change in connected speech. For example, 你好 is written nǐ hǎo, but its first syllable is normally pronounced with a rising tone.

The time word comes before the verb here. 去, 看 and 喝 do not change their form when the subject or time changes. Other words and the surrounding conversation help express time and aspect.

Words, characters and phrases are different

水 is one word written with one character. 朋友 is one word written with two characters. 你喝什么 is a question made from several words. Keep those units separate when setting a study goal: learning 100 characters is not the same as learning 100 words.

Add a few useful expressions alongside the table: 你好 (nǐ hǎo, hello), 谢谢 (xièxie, thank you), 再见 (zàijiàn, goodbye), and 对不起 (duìbuqǐ, sorry). Their neutral syllables matter just as much as the marked tones.

Turn this list into ten minutes of practice

  1. Choose five words from one group. Open their dictionary entries to check meanings, examples and audio where available.
  2. Listen before repeating. Hide the pinyin and try to recall the pronunciation, including the tone.
  3. Use one example sentence, then replace a word: 我喝水 becomes 我喝茶.
  4. Return tomorrow and try to recall the words before looking. Add more only if the earlier words are becoming familiar.
