When to use Discourse Connectors

其实 introduces a clarification or contrast with expectation. 另外 adds another point. 比如 introduces examples that make a point concrete.

另外，我们还需要时间。

In addition, we still need time.

我喜欢运动，比如跑步和游泳。

I like exercise, for example running and swimming.

关于这个方面，我还有一个问题。

Regarding this aspect, I have another question.

其实他已经决定了。

Actually, he has already decided.

Common traps

  • Do not use connectors as filler if the relation is unclear.
  • 比如 should be followed by a real example.
  • 另外 adds another point; 然后 orders time.
